Minerva Academy FC went down fighting 1-0 to Dempo SC in their first home match of the 2nd Division League final round at the Sector 17 stadium in Chandigarh.
With India internationals and ISL players in their rank, Dempo SC came all out but didn’t go back without a scare. Had Manvir Singh not misses the host of chances that he got, the story would have been different.
Dempo came all guns blazing and started with a bang, attacking from the word go. Minervans, meanwhile took some time to settle down, playing for the first time in their home ground. But just as when they started to gel, they got the hitting.
A blip of brilliance from Uttam Rai in the 10th minute of the game made all the difference. He was feed on a beautiful pass by Mandar Rao, which he stopped, turn 360 degree and took a powerful shot beyond the reach of Arshdeep Singh.
Minerva’s first real chance came in the 25 minute when Kareem release Sajandeep on the left, whose effort was by the stretching Laxmikant Kattimani.
In the next minute, Sukhwinder released Manvir, who beat the offside trap but manage to get only feeble left footer, which failed to trouble the keeper.
Again the 39th minute, Sehijpal was in the thick of things again in the midfield, dozing two players to beautifully released Manvir. But the lanky striker failed to beat the keeper with his first shot and when he got the opportunity to shot the rebound, it flew over the bar.
The match went into the break with Dempo SC having the one goal edge.
The second half started with Minerva coming all-out this time and dominated the 2nd half throughout. Host of chances were created from the middle with Sehijpal taking charge. The introduction of Dilliram and Pawandeep infused more attacking power as they joined the force in creating more chances but the elusive goal never came for the host as they dropped 3 points at home.
Minerva have now dropped to the 3rd position behind Neroca and Dempo. They play their next match against Lonestar Kashmir FC on 24th April at the Sector 17 stadium in Chandigarh.
