Mohun Bagan defeated Tampines Rovers FC 3-1 in the preliminary round of qualifying for AFC Asian Champions League 2016, played at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata on wednesday, 27th January 2016. Mohun Bagan were very dominant and ruthless from the word go and deservingly took the lead in the 5th minute through Indian International Jeje Lalpekhlua off a low drilled cross from Dhanachandra Singh. The Mariners could have doubled their lead through Cornell Glen but the Trinidad and Tobago striker failed to convert from the spot in the 35th minute after he was fouled by Kwon of Tampines Rovers. Cornell Glen however scored Mohun Bagan's second goal six minutes later after some fantastic work by Sony Norde in the left side of the box. The deficit was however reduced by Yasir Hanapi who was left completely unmarked by the Mohun Bagan defence from a dangerous set-piece situation. The scoreline read 2-1 in Mohun Bagan's favor but they Sanjay Sen's men could have perhaps doubled their goals tally considering the amount of chances they missed.

The second half began with a brisk pace with Tampines Rovers dominating the possession and playing with more intent than they showed in the first half. Mohun Bagan however did not allow the visitors to score the equalizer courtesy of some good defending and some poor finishing. Yasir could have equalized in the 80th minute but his free shot went over the bar after the Mohun Bagan defence was split wide open. Japanese midfielder Katsumi Yusa put the match to bed after he found the back of the net after being helped on by substitute Prabir Das from a goalmouth melee after a corner. The scoreline read 3-1 after the full time whistle sending the Mariners to the next round of qualifying stage where they will face Chinese Super League outfit Shandong Luneng Taishan on February 2nd, 2016.
