Recently crowned Hero I-League champions and defending Federation Cup champions, Bengaluru FC were handed a shock exit from the Hero Federation Cup 2016 by Aizawl FC, who ironically were relegated from the I-League this season. Aizawl FC after defeating Westwood's side at home 2-1 went on to win 3-2 in Bengaluru on Tuesday, 3rd May at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium. Two goals from Joel Sunday , who was also on the scoresheet in the first leg and a goal from skipper David Lalrinmuana proved too much for The Blues as they lost 5-3 on aggregate. Aizawl FC thus qualify for the semi-finals and will face the winners of the tie between Mumbai FC and Sporting Goa.
