Derby ends in a draw

The high voltage encounter between the Kolkata giants ended in 1-1 after full time whistle at the YBK today. Both teams started briskly with good speed and some quality passes being exchanged. The first goal came in the form of penalty being awarded to the East Bengal team when Indian Natioanal defender Surkumar Singh unintentionally handed the ball in his own box from a low cross by Tolgay which was deflected to him(Surkumar) by Sushil Kumar Singh. The spot kick was converted by Snaju Pradhan who must feel lucky after his shot was hit in the middle and Mohun Bagan goalie Shilton nearly saved that effort. Mohun Bagan restored parity through their Brazilian legend Jose Barreto when the experienced brazilian headed the ball from some distance into the goal from a low cross. The match ended 1-1 after first half. Both teams played some good football and using the wings to good effect most of the time.

The second half didn't go through that smoothly when the game went more physical. Tackles were flying from all over the ground and numerous stoppages were seen. Some decisions from on field referee Pratap Singh were highly questionable. One of those decisions were seen when Barreto who was already booked went in for a challenge against East Bengal goalie Sandip Nandy which clearly deserved a yellow card, hence an automatic red card for double booking, but he was not shown so. The flames ignited when the referee gave double booking for Gurwinder Singhs challenge on Barreto and was given marching orders because of double booking. Players were getting involved in unnecessary fights far too often. Ashim Biswas played only 2 minutes because of his stupid tackle on Mehtab when Ashim stepped over Mehtab moments after coming off the Bench in place of Muritala.

The game showed a lot of promise earlier but one thing is crystal clear and most of the supporters will agree with the fact that Bad Referring ruined the game.
