Mohun Bagan were beaten quite convincingly by Shandong Luneng FC in the AFC Asian Champions League Preliminary Stage 2 match at the Jinan Olympic Centre on Tuesday, 2nd February 2016.

Two Goals from Yang Xu and one goal a piece from each of Walter Montillo, Diego Tardelli, Zheng Zheng and Wang Yongpo proved too much for the travelling Mohun Bagan team. Sanjay Sen's men were upto the task during the initial stages of the first half but the Chinese Super League(CSL) outfit took the game in total control after taking the lead in the 24th minute through former Argentina International Montillo.

By the end of first half Mohun Bagan were down 2-0 but the story continued in similar fashoin in the second half as they shipped in four more goals. The Mariners went aggonizingly close on opening their goals increasing their goals tally through Sony Norde and Kean Lewis but apart from those, the i-League champions were restricted by the quality Chinese side.

Shandong Luneng FC with the victory will play against Adelaide United in Australia for a place in group F of the final stage of Asian Champions League. Indian champions Mohun Bagan will now have their sights set on AFC Cup apart from the domestic competition. In AFC Cup, Mohun Bagan have secured automatic qualification to the group G of AFC Cup where they will face South China(Hong Kong), Maziya Sports and Recreation(Maldives), Yangon United(Malaysia).
