Indian contingent had a great day in continental competition today as both Bengaluru FC and East Bengal both registered good victories over Singaporean opponents Warriors FC and Balestier Khalsa FC respectively.
Robin Singh scored the all important goal for Bengaluru FC in the 76th minute in a game where Bengaluru FC dominated most of the part. Sunil Chhetri showed his class as he was a standout performer for the Blues having several attempts saved by the Warriors shot-stopper. First half saw both Warriors FC and Bengaluru FC playing their heart out in a fast paced game but both failing to break the deadlock. Early in the second half, Warriors FC threatened the Bengaluru FC goal but the Blues settled down and started to dominate the proceedings. Robin Singh's long range strike into the right corner of the net in the 76th minute came off from a ill-taken goal-kick which the Bengaluru FC players pounced on. The game finished 0-1 in favor of Bengaluru FC playing away and thus Warriors FC became the first causality of the AFC Cup 2015, crashing out of the tournament without a single point till date.
Eelco Schattorie played down the importance of the AFC Cup 2015 tie against Balestier Khalsa FC prioritizing the national league "Hero i-League" over the continental championship. Fielding a second string team without the likes of Dudu Omagbemi and Ranti Martins in the starting XI, East Bengal started the game on a high with a string of short-passing game and keeping their opponents at bay. Baldeep Singh Jr. broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute when he rose above everyone to rifle a corner to the back of the net. Balestier Khalsa FC showed more intent than their lackluster first half but a own goal in the 71st minute killed their hope when Nurullah Hussein sliced a cross back onto his own net. Ranti Martins coming on as a substitute completed the thrashing in the 75th minute as he kept his cool after being played through to a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper.
