Mohun Bagan vs East Bengal, A Statistical Approach, Actual Picture Courtesy: ebrp.in |
Just before the derby, we at
ABCDFootball thought that we could bring up something interesting and we
had no magic hat to pull off something “out of the box” but the usual order of
the day –“The Statistics”, because that’s what we are best at.
East Bengal and Mohun Bagan did not have
the best of starts to this season and the statistics seapks of themselves. Much
was expected of the Kolkata giants from their enormous number of fans but as of
yet, they have failed to deliver.

The two teams captain and Coach at the Press Meet |
So much so was the pressure on the East Bengal management that they finally had to pull the trigger on the misfiring coach Marcos Falopa
under whom East Bengal had glory in AFC Cup reaching the semi finals but
i-League campaign proved nothing sort of spectacular with some ordinary
performances after a promising start against Shillong Lajong FC.
The story was same for East Bengal’s fierce
rivals Mohun Bagan, as their “King Cobra” - Odafa Okolie never was available
for selection for selection in the i-League after picking up an injury before
the season started. Eric Muranda looked more like a desperate purchase rather
than a smart one and Mohun Bagan could not get off the blocks quickly enough to
pose a threat to the title challenge either.
But, with all the points being stated, none
would have any role to play when the game boils down to East Bengal and Mohun
Bagan facing each other in world renowned Kolkata Derby which attracts crowd
over 1 Lakhs in a packed Salt Lake Stadium. The electrifying atmosphere is
unmatched and for a football lover, it’s a game one just cant afford to miss.
We try to cover up their journey in the
i-League till now in our very own statistical way. We are going to disect their
campaign in the Airtel i-League to several bits and pieces so that its easier
to understand their performances categorically.
Lets see how the two teams have performed
at Home till now.

Both teams have not played much at their
home till now and before going into any decision making it should be noted that
East Bengal have played two of their
three home games at Kalyani. Both teams have secured a single victory as all
the games have brought a result without any draws in between. East Bengal have
played a game more than Mohun Bagan and add to that they lost a game more than
their arch rivals. East Bengal fans could boast of their attackers having
scored 5 goals in 3 games at an average of 1.7 goals per game while Mohun Bagan
are not too far behind with 3 goals in 2 matches averaging at 1.5 goals per
game. On the defending side, Mohun Bagan are ahead by a good margin only
conceeding 3 in their 2 games, though that might not sound good but when it’s a
head-to-head comparision, East Bengal are lagging far behind conceding 6 goals
in just 3 matches.
Now we shift our focus to Away Form:

Though the away record might not be a
factor when the two teams face each other at the Salt Lake Stadium(which is
virtually home to both the teams), we thought it would be better to include the
statistics to have a better understanding of their performance overall. Mohun
Bagan have played 4 more matches than their counterpart but that advantage does
not sum up in the goals department. Scoring at a rate of 0.5 goals per game,
East Bengal are miles ahead in this section with 5 goals in just 2 matches they
played and one of them being a four goal demolition at Shillong against
Shillong Lajong FC. But, Mohun Bagan have one quality that they can be proud of
and that is their defense spearheaded by Eche Anyichie has only conceded 4
goals in 6 games with 3 clean sheets. Though one might argue that East Bengal
have got a better goal conceded per game ratio than Mohun Bagan but it needs to
be seen that Mohun Bagan have got 4 more games on their name thus showing more
consistency.
We now bring our attention to the overall
record and try to see how both the teams have managed thus far:

In the overall comparision both teams have
literally cancelled out each other in one way or other. With equal number of
wins and losses, Mohun Bagan have drawn the other three games they have played
more than their arch rivals.
Both the teams have got one positives and
negatives to take from the overall comparision as one can see from the green
and red marked cells. East Bengal are a great threat going upfront with the
likes of James Moga and Chidi Edeh with the addition of Cavin Lobo, but their
defense has been very shaky to say the least conceding at the rate of 1.4 goals
per game. Mohun Bagan on the other hand would be very proud of their defense
conceding 7 goals in 8 matches which is a good sign but their front line have
not been firing till now with the likes of Eric Muranda not being very
clinical.

East Bengal fans would bank on their
foreign duo of James Moga and Chidi Edeh to get them the goals while Mohun
Bagan fans would be hoping for a super return of their star forward Odafa
Okolie. While for East Bengal players like Cavin Lobo have got a name for
themselves, Ram Malik has been a revelation for Mohun Bagan this season. On
the negative side, Chidi Edeh and Eric Muranda share the same problem of not
finding the back of the net, a Kolkata Derby would be a great stage to regain
their stature.
Now, we will try to figure out how both the
teams have scored and conceded their goals with respect to the 90 minutes
clock.

From the goal scoring pattern it is very
obvious to see that both teams have scored most of their goals in the final 15
minutes while neither of them have been off the blocks very quick having scored
just a single goal in the first 45 minutes.

On the conceding side, East Bengal and
Mohun Bagan share similar outcome but on a very contrasting manner with the Red
and Golds leaking goals in the first 15 minutes while the Mariners doing the
same in the last 15 minutes.
Having all this being said, again we
re-iterate that none of these might hold firm when the two teams fight it out
at the Salt Lake stadium on 24th November 2013 throwing virtually
their life at everything. We could only hope that it could live up to its
expectation and be a highlight of Indian Football to the rest of the world.
