A Dempo SC Press Release

Dempo Sports Club won their first match of the I-League U-20 by drubbing Mumbai FC 2-1 at Gopal Maidan, Jamshedpur.

Dempo took the lead in 13th minute when Clencio Pinto embarked on a solo run after receiving a defense splitting pass from Nickson Castanha.  Mumbai FC goalkeeper was easily beaten by Clencio who kept his composure intact to slot in the opening goal for Dempo SC. It was a good mixture of counter attacking play in first half by both the teams as Mumbai FC looked desperate to find the equalizer. Defender Mawrick Almeida was unlucky when his flawlessly guided header hit the Mumbai goalpost in the 38th minute. Dempo were leading 1-0 till the half time.

With the change of sides, Mumbai FC began using their flanks more effectively. In one such move, where the ball was floated into Dempo territory, Richard Fernandes failed to clear the line and was instead accused of a foul inside the danger zone. The Referee was quick to point to the penalty spot thereby giving a chance to Mumbai FC to equalize in the 50th minute. Dempo SC, sensing urgency to restore the lead, threw Aniston Fernandes upfront along with Myron and Clencio with a 4-3-3 formation. The trio kept pressuring Mumbai defense until the 68th minute when Myron Fernandes, who was sent to Denmark for training by the club in 2012, shot home the winner from just outside the box.

Youth Coach Matthew D’Costa was elated with the performance “We played a better game today, the boys stuck to the game plan and delivered the results. I cannot single out anybody but the entire team put in their best effort” said the coach.

Bharat Thapa was adjudged as the Man of the Match. Dempo SC will now play against East Bengal on 8th March at the same venue.
