After the fighting campaign at the Asian Cup there is more news for Indian football and sport lovers to cheer about. Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia has been selected to be part of the Laureus Sports Awards.
The Awards were established in 1999 and are awarded on annually to World’s most outstanding sports achievers. They were developed by founding patrens Daimler and Richemont. Ever since its first gala in 2000 in Monte Carlo and has grown considerably. The winners are selected by a comprehensive sports panel that consists of 46 members of the Laureus World Sports Academy, the living legends of sports honouring the great athletes of today.
Last year’s winners included names like Usain Bolt, Serena Williams, Jenson Button, Kim Clijsters, Natalie du Toit and Stephanie Gilmore. It was hosted by Oscar winner, Kevin Spacey and was attended by film artistes like Hugh Grant and Clive Own. This year the Laureus World Sports Award will be held at Abu Dhabi.
To be part of such a grand sporting event is extremely special for any sportsperson. Bhaichung was no different when he was asked to be a part of the event in 2011 and was ecstatic when he received the news. . "It is a great honour for me to be a part of this grand sporting event. Many consider this as the Oscars of Sports and I feel privileged to be a part of it and hope to keep the flag of my country flying high.”
Indian skipper will also be part of the charity football game with all other sports persons coming for the laureus awards this year. This should see the biggest names in the sporting fraternity coming out. Big wigs like Kobe Bryant, Andres Iniesta, Lionel Messi, Rafael Nadal, Manny Pacquiao, Sebastian Vettel, Serena Williams and Kim Clisjters would be present. Members of the Inter Milan team, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Spanish World Cup team would also be present.
